We've bought ourselves an early Christmas present! A brand new Core Loss Tester is on it's way to AEM.

The core of a motor is made up of many layers of thin individually insulated lamination plates which are sandwiched together. These laminations form the stator core around which the copper wire is wound. The condition of the core can be tested by measuring the amount of electrical energy lost per kilogram of steel when the core is excited to normal operating conditions.

Increased losses are most frequently caused by physical damage to the core, for example a rotor rubbing on the stator core due to bearing failure (pictured below).

AEM will soon be able to perform core loss tests on motors up to 1,860kW, and provide comprehensive print-out reports in addition to our existing detailed repair reports.

A common type of failure of three phase motors is a single phased winding failure. This type of failure indicates a problem with the power supply, not with the motor itself.

Causes can include a blown fuse, burnt or damaged contactor, or a faulty power cable. When the the motor attempts to operate on only two of the three phases, it results in the faulty phase burning-out and creating an alternating burn pattern throughout the winding.
