It would be difficult to dispute the many advantages and sheer convenience of using an inverter or variable frequency drive (VFD) with a motor. Often, the convenience of this option overshadows the negative implications associated with the use of inverters.

The most significant problem caused by inverters is the premature failure of bearings, however this is usually only in larger frame sizes. One can also expect long term effects such as increases in vibration, noise levels and temperature as well as reduction in motor efficiency and life – all issues which are significant to every size of motor.
